What is the Steltman Chair?
The Steltman Chair is a famous chair design created by Dutch architect and furniture designer Gerrit Rietveld in 1963. The iconic chair was originally designed as a commission for the Steltman jewellery store in the Netherlands to display jewelry.
The chair features a geometric structure made up of straight lines and angles. The most noticeable feature is the chair not having any back legs, instead it is supported by a diagonal bracing element that extends from the top of the back rest to the floor, hence its unique and distinctive design.
The Steltman Chair is also considered an icon of modern design and is highly sought after by design enthusiasts. This is because the geometric forms reflect the architect’s commitment to the principles of De Stijil, which emphasizes simple and abstraction.
Up until now It continues to be celebrated as a timeless piece of furniture design that embodies the modernist ideals of form and function.
